So here is a guideline for how to get a good job in software testing field. If you are a fresher and just passed out from your college or passing out in coming months then you need to prepare well for some software testing methodologies. Prepare all the manual testing concepts.
If possible have some hands-on on some automation and bug tracking tools like WinRunner and test director. It is always a good idea to join any software testing institute or class which will provide you a good start and direction of preparation. You can join any 4 months duration software testing course or can do diploma in software testing which is typical of 6 months to 1 year. Keep the preparation going on in your course duration. This will help you to start giving interviews right after getting over your course. If you have some sort of previous IT experience and want to switch to software testing then it’s somewhat simple for you.
Show your previous IT experience in your resume while applying for software testing jobs. If possible do some crash course to get the idea of software testing concepts like I mentioned for freshers above. Keep in mind that you have some kind of IT experience so be prepared for some tough interview questions here. As companies always prefer some kind of relevant experience for any software job, it’s better if you have relevant experience in software testing and QA.
It may be any kind of software testing tools hands-on or some testing course from reputed institutes. Please always keep in mind- Do not add the fake experience of any kind. This can ruin your career forever. Wait and try for some more days to get the job by your abilities instead of getting into the trap of fake experience. Last important words, Software testing is not ‘anyone can do career!’ Remove this attitude from your mind if someone has told such kind of foolish thing to you.
Testing requires in-depth knowledge of SDLF, out of box thinking, analytical skill and some programming language skill apart from software testing basics. So best luck and start preparing for your rocking career!
I will continue writing this career series and what you actually need to prepare for software testing interview. 1,387 comments ↓ Nikhil Vijay, Definitely a good guide. I am going to switch to software testing. I have 2 years exp in electronics field. How can I prepare resume? @ Nikhil- you can mention whatever experience you have in your Electronics career.
If you have done any professional testing class then its worth to mention it in your resume. Any IT background or project related to IT will be added advantage. Prepare the things well mentioned in your resume.
Sobin hi vijay i have got 1 yr experience of manual testing, Since this is my first job, according to you how long should i stay this company and which testing cerification should i go for ISQTB or CSTE. I am really shocked by Sobin’s first question! Sobin there is no rule that you should leave the company after 1 year for your first job. This is completely wrong thinking. You should first concentrate on learning the things and of course you should think of switch if there is really any problem with your current employer.
Long career with one company is not bad at all. Remove this thought first from your mind. Your 2nd question, As far as your exp. You should go for CSTE. Hai this is lakshmi plz give some suggestions and job openings ok Ashwin Acharya hi this is ashwincompoleted B.Tech last year.

Bcs i need a job to educate my chidren. @ sridevi I understand how eager you are getting into job. I will suggest one thing to you, first build confidence in you.
For this you should be clear on technical topics in testing. You mentioned your work on Manual testing and QTP so be clear what you speak in front of interviewer on these topics. Identify weak points both technical and verbal (if any) and try to improve on those points.

I have 2 years of work ex in manual testing (black box testing). And I have some exposure to MQC also. I have learnt as much as i could in my current organization. I am looking for a job change now so that I can learn more in testing field and rise in my career. I will appear for ISTQB foundation level certification test within a month. Could you please guide me in this direction like whatelse should i learn to move to another good MNC. Thanks Poonam Sowmya Hi vijay!
I am basically a engineer from the construction industry. Now i want to change my field.I have 4 yrs exp.in Project management ( CAD,MSP & Primavera). Can u suggest me a suitable area(s/w) where i can get into. Hi Vijay, I have done Diploma in Comp (PolyTech.) as well as BCA (61% Agg.). Post my Diploma I Joined IBM-Daksh(call centre) and was working there till last month as SME for an ISP Process then I left the job in persue of career in Testing field. I did 3 months of certification course as well from DUCAT Noida now my question is that IS it a good move to relocate myself to Banglore or PUNE for the better job prospects or should I stay in my home town(Delhi).
I am in a dellima so please reply soon to this post. Thanks a lot in advance Jatin Khurana @ Manjunath – Show whatever previous experience you have. Be specific about your experience and don’t fake any testing experience. @ Poonam – If you are interested in some basic scripting then go for scripting languages like TSL, VB, Perl or Java. Otherwise you can continue your Manual testing career. Even its good if you get some insight of some programming languages to better test your application.
@Sowmya – I don’t know why you want to change your career, as you now have 4+ yrs exp in construction field. If you still think its good move for you then find out companies which are dealing with some construction projects and having a strong backbone of IT processes to implement it.
Then your domain knowledge will be very useful for you. @ Jatin – Its depend on you where you want to stay and make career. If you are interested in software testing and have got enough knowledge of testing then you can easily get the job in testing anywhere.
In case of any good opportunity in Bangalore or Pune you can consider to go for it. See the article – resna i want to know about the software testing courses. Is there any online courses?
